Tucson group aims to help veterans find housing

TUCSON, AZ (Tucson News Now) – Veterans who are looking for a new home are in luck this weekend.

On Saturday, May 14, a housing summit is hosting an event to provide both veterans and real estate agents selling to veterans information about housing and financial options.

The VAREP Tucson Chapter was started a year ago by Sandy Heath, who was the first woman in the United States Marine Corps to be stationed with men in a deployable unit.

She’s seen a lot of barriers come down in the military, but said life after serving can also sometimes be tough.

The organization educates veterans and military members about the housing and financing options available to them.

She and her team are seeking out veterans in the Tucson community this weekend for a Saturday filled with financing facts.

Phyllis James, VAREP Community Outreach Director said benefits are constantly evolving.

“You have these benefits, you have served your country, this is what is available to you today. It may not have been available 20 years ago, but it’s available today. Do you know? Let us help you to find out,” James said.

It’s not only vets that should brush up on their benefits, VAREP also educates people in the real estate industry about selling to vets.

“You can shop and shop and shop and not even find a seller that’s willing to do the VA loan because there’s a lot of misinformation out there,” Heath said.

The Veteran’s Housing Summit will take place Saturday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

The event is located at Brother John’s on 1801 N. Stone Avenue.

Housing information, loan assistance and lunch will be provided for free.
